Caring for stoneware

Hand-glazed pieces last for decades with a little care. A short guide.

Coffee being poured on a wooden table

Stoneware is fired hotter than everyday pottery, which makes it dense, heavy and very strong. With a little care, a good mug outlives the person who bought it.

Avoid sudden changes

Do not move a cold plate straight into a hot oven, or pour boiling water into a mug that has just come out of the fridge. Sudden temperature changes are the main reason glazes crack.

Hand-thrown means hand wash

Our mugs, plates and bowls are dishwasher safe, but hand-thrown pieces like the tea bowl keep their glaze brightest when washed by hand with a soft brush.

Lift the grey marks

Small marks from cutlery on matte glazes come off with a little baking soda paste. Rub gently, rinse, and they are gone.
